This striking dark-morph Swainson's Hawk Buteo swainsoni was one of at least three such birds among the estimated 1,500 Swainson's Hawks (many of which were intermediate and light-intermediate morphs) that were standing in short-grass fields next to H281 just west of Alice, Jim Wells county, southern Texas on the afternoon of October 21, 2009. There were also scores of Crested Caracaras in these fields, and the birds seemed to be taking advantage of an insect infestation:
